Building Application : Metal Roof
Preview

It has always been a challenge to reduce rain impact noise for metal roofs. Over the decades, educational institutions and performance theatres which utilized metal roofing always faced the dilemma of rain impact noise during heavy downpour. Classes and performance are affected by overwhelming rain impact noise.

In recent years, various noise control solutions have been proposed to reduce the noise transmission of rain impact noise through metal roofing. More hardboard materials were added to the basic metal roofing system to enhance its transmission loss properties. No doubt such solutions can provide some significant results - but at what expense ? Also, what about radiated noise caused by metal roof ?

Conventional Rain Impact Noise Treatment

Deci-Damp treated metal roof reduces radiated noise to the surroundings.

Using conventional methods to treat rain impact noise is pretty straightforward; by adding thicker and high density board materials, the result will apparent but the costs can be very high.

High Costs :
To construct such systems require ever increasing thickness in supporting channels and purlins, which in turn will increase construction costs. Moreover, as more insulation layers were added, manpower cost and building materials cost will escalate. In addition, time, which is always critical in construction projects, is required to build such extensive systems. Any delay in constructing the metal roofing as a result of such extensive designs will hold back the rest of the building trades as weathertight conditions are necessary before interior fitouts and installation can proceed.

Quality of Works Cannot Be Ensured :

Conformance to roofing design is also vital such as overlapping of insulation boards between layers or else there will be noise intrusion between joints. Such conformance during construction may not be easily monitored due to the inaccessibility of most roofs.

Danger Overhead :
Another critical element is the additional load the purlins have to bear, Specified spacings between purlins are sometimes not conformed totally and such variations may mean that some of the high density boards are sitting very close to the purlins edges; any resulting movement in the building due to thermal expansion and contraction of concrete may cause these boards to fall out of place and the consequences can be disastrous!

Radiated Noise Not Arrested :
Conventional treatment only take care of reducing noise through the metal roof but not radiated noise which can affect the units above the roof and adjacent blocks.

Taken in perspective, conventional systems do have its strength but its drawbacks must also be taken into consideration.
